RCTQ director, PNU professors recognized at Best Makatizen Teachers award ceremony
RCTQ Director Dr. Gina Gonong and two other professors from the Philippine Normal University (PNU) were recognized at the Teachers’ Day celebration of the Division of Makati on October 4 as jurors of the Search for the Best Makatizen Teachers 2019.
Dr. Gonong, who chaired the panel of judges during the final round of the competition, were recognized along with two PNU associate professors, Dr. Voltaire Villanueva and Dr. Ma. Corazon Sigua at the awarding of the three winners at the Makati Coliseum.
Ms. Rita Riddle, Schools Division Superintendent of the Division of Makati City, presented the certificates of recognition.
“Two years after the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) was signed as a policy, we are delighted to see how it’s now being operationalized in DepEd systems, and how it is being mainstreamed in schools and divisions nationwide,” said Dr. Gonong. “We have seen these standards demonstrated by the winners of the Best Makatizen Teachers.”
Supported by the City Government of Makati, the search process used the standards set out in the PPST as criteria for choosing the winners.
“We believe that teachers should have the abilities to manage educational technology tools and the integration of ICT in classroom teaching, should be adept with art and science of teaching, and be familiar with current trends in their respective areas of specialisation,” said Mr Neil Vincent C. Sandoval, Education Program Supervisor of the DepEd Division of Makati. “Aside from wanting to give recognition to best and deserving teachers, we really want to increase awareness on the PPST.”
The three teachers who were adjudged as Best Makatizen Teachers and received cash prizes from Makati Mayor Abigail Binay and Congressman Luis Campos were
- Mr. Dionicio A. Pacpaco, Pitogo High School
- Ms. Anna Liza A. Ataiza, Makati High School, and
- Mr. Rogelio L. Bañas, Jr., San Antonio Village Elementary School
Out of 3,000 teachers in Makati City, 15 qualified as official nominees, and eight (8) were picked as finalists. Dr. Gonong’s team selected the winners, who were judged based on their use of technology, pedagogy and content in teaching, from the eight finalists.
Launched and adopted as a DepEd policy in 2017, PPST defines what competencies constitute teacher quality both in pre-service and in-service education, and in the context of the K to 12 reform. RCTQ was DepEd’s partner in drafting and validating the teacher standards.
