The Philippine Normal University (PNU) and RITQ held a collaborative meeting on 3 May 2024 to synchronize efforts on pre-service teacher education research initiatives.

The meeting discussed the research priorities and directions set by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II), aiming to ensure that the work of both teams aligns with EDCOM II’s goals for teacher education.

PNU President Dr. Bert J. Tuga emphasized the importance of a unified approach in addressing current demands based on EDCOM II research priorities. He said, “As a team, we have a common understanding of what the current demand is based on EDCOM researches so that our efforts as PNU are targeted to address urgent needs. We have also identified our priorities and timeline based on resources.”

The PNU team was led by President Dr. Bert J. Tuga, who was joined by Dr. Marilyn U. Balagtas, Vice President for Academics (VPA); Dr. Teresita T. Rungduin, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Quality Assurance (VPREQA); Dr. Gladys C. Nivera, Dean, College of Teacher Development (CTD); Dr. Antriman V. Orleans, Dean, College of Advanced Studies (CAS); Dr. Celia M. Ilanan, Dean, College of Alternative and Lifelong Learning (CALL); Dr. Joel G. Tubera, Director, Institute of Creative Expressions and Human Movement Education (ICEHME), and Dr. Ma. Arsenia G. Gomez, Director, Research Management Office (RMO).

RITQ was represented by Dr. Jennie Jocson; deputy director Dr. Allan S. Reyes; senior program managers Dr. Maria Teresa Manicio, Dr. Brando S. Palomar, and Ms. Ma. Lourdes Pantoja; senior project officer Ms. Franchita Alcausin; and project officers Mr. Mikkey Mari Tuazon, Ms. Donnadette Belza, and Ms. Cristy Mendoza.

RITQ presented a concept brief titled “Strengthening Pre-service Teacher Education,” which included propositions for enhancing pre-service teacher education in the Philippines. This brief, emerging from Republic Act 11713 and consultations within EDCOM II, is designed to provide a foundation for policy development and evidence-based research. The document serves as a preliminary discussion paper to guide RITQ’s work and PNU’s academic directions as the National Center for Teacher Education (NCTE) and advisor to the Teacher Education Council (TEC).
