PNU Vice President for Academics and first RCTQ Director Dr. Marilyn Balagtas, and RITQ Senior Program Manager Dr. Maria Teresa Manicio received the certificate of recognition for RITQ.

RITQ was recognized at the Teacher Education Council (TEC) Center of Excellence (COE) & Center of Development (COD) Convention 2024, held from 28 to 31 May 2024 in Cebu City.

During the gala night, RITQ was honored with a special award for its long-standing partnership with TEC on various teacher education projects.  This recognition underscores the institute’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education through rigorous research and collaboration.

The event brought together 36 COEs and 38 CODs from across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, under the theme “AGUHON: Looking Back, Moving Forward towards Excellence in Teacher Education.”

RITQ Director Dr. Jennie Jocson

RITQ Director Dr. Jennie Jocson delivered a plenary talk on the proactive development of Centers of Excellence. Her session culminated in a dynamic focus group discussion aimed at generating ideas for creating a robust system for COEs.

“The convention successfully provided a compass for teacher education stakeholders to navigate the future, drawing on past lessons and strategic planning,” Dr. Jocson said. “The collective efforts and shared insights from this convention are expected to drive excellence in teacher education, reinforcing the profession’s critical role in shaping the nation’s future.”

In a separate session, former RCTQ Director and current DepEd Undersecretary Dr. Gina Gonong addressed the convention on the importance of supporting Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) in alignment with DepEd’s MATATAG Agenda. Undersecretary Gonong emphasized the necessity of preparing pre-service teachers for the new curriculum to ensure a competent teaching force.

Dr. Gonong also represented the DepEd Secretary and TEC Ex Officio Chairperson, Vice President Sara Z. Duterte, in delivering the convention’s keynote address.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian provided a comprehensive overview of the state of teacher education in the Philippines, including the performance of COEs and other TEIs in the licensure examinations. He highlighted the transformative potential of RA 11713, contingent upon its effective implementation, to reshape teacher education.

EDCOM Il Executive Director Dr. Karol Mark Yee presented findings from past studies on Philippine education, revealing that some longstanding challenges persist. He emphasized the critical role of TEIs and teacher educators in driving positive change. Dr. Yee urged open dialogue and collaboration within the TEI community to tackle these enduring issues.

The convention aimed to foster professional connections and collaborative initiatives within the academic community; establish a supportive network for ongoing communication and resource-sharing; address emerging challenges and opportunities in teacher education; discuss issues such as inclusivity, cooperation, and the evolving role of educators; identify and share best practices to tackle current and future challenges; and integrate gender mainstreaming principles into organizational policies and projects.

The four-day event featured panel discussions, plenary sessions, and breakout rooms, providing a platform for open dialogue on essential topics related to teacher education, policy formulation, program development, and quality assurance.

The gala night, hosted by the Cebu City government, was attended by acting mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, who reiterated the city’s support for TEC’s initiatives. Congressman Mark Go, one of the authors of RA 11713, inspired attendees by emphasizing the law’s significance in elevating the status of educators and supporting systems essential for nation building.
